Guilty Verdict in Federal Harboring Case – facing up to 5 years in prison and fine of $250,000

“Annie George claimed she never knew the woman who lived with her family for 51/2 years was an [unauthorized] immigrant.  A federal jury did not believe her.  After eight-to-10 hours of deliberation over two days, the panel convicted George on Friday of harboring 49-year-old Valsamma Mathai, a fellow native of India, as an [unauthorized] alien between 2005 and 2011.  George, 40, now faces up to 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.  Jurors acquitted George of the more serious charge of harboring an [unauthorized] alien for financial gain, which would have carried up to 10 years in prison.  Chief U.S. District Court Judge Gary Sharpe, who presided over the week-long trial, will decide next week if the government can move to seize George’s home — the 30,000-square foot Llenroc mansion at 708 Riverview Road in Rexford — because of her conviction.” – Times Union, Mar. 8, 2013.
